Understanding Your Skin Type
Understanding your skin type is the foundation of any effective skincare routine. Whether you’re choosing products or planning professional treatments, knowing what your skin needs is the first step toward achieving healthy, radiant results.
The Five Main Skin Types
Dermatologists generally classify skin into five categories: normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. Each type has unique characteristics that influence how your skin responds to different products and environmental factors.
Normal Skin
Normal skin is well-balanced — neither too oily nor too dry. It has a smooth texture, minimal pores, and rarely experiences breakouts. While it’s the least problematic type, it still benefits from consistent care and sun protection.
Dry Skin
Dry skin often feels tight, may appear flaky, and can show fine lines more prominently. It produces less sebum than normal skin, which means the natural lipid barrier is compromised. Hydrating treatments and rich moisturisers are essential.
Oily Skin
Oily skin is characterised by excess sebum production, enlarged pores, and a tendency toward acne and blackheads. While it may be more prone to breakouts, oily skin often ages more slowly due to the natural moisture barrier.
Combination Skin
Combination skin features both oily and dry areas — typically an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with drier cheeks. This type requires a balanced approach, often using different products for different facial zones.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin reacts easily to products, environmental changes, and stress. It may appear red, feel irritated, or develop rashes. Gentle, fragrance-free formulations and patch testing are crucial for this skin type.
Professional Assessment
While self-assessment can provide a general idea, a professional skin analysis offers a detailed understanding of your skin’s condition, including hydration levels, pigmentation patterns, and underlying concerns that may not be visible to the naked eye.
